How to Measure a Stump

Measure the widest above-ground diameter of the stump, including raised roots or flared areas connected to the stump. If the stump is oval-shaped, measure across the widest point.

Tripping Over Raised Roots? Fix it Once, Not Every Spring.

Surface roots from old silver maples, elms and ash trees make lawns hard to mow and easy to trip over. Our raised-root removal service grinds exposed roots flush with the surrounding grade, so you can mow cleanly, repair the lawn and stop patching the same raised spots every year.

Had a large pine cut down in the front yard, and had then grind that stump and another old stump in the backyard. There was a mixup about getting the stump cutoff from the backyard picked up, but it was all resolved without a lot of runaround.

Common Stump Situations in West Allis

West Allis has seen many mature ash trees removed over the past decade due to the Emerald Ash Borer. After CutNGo or another crew removes the tree, the stump often remains behind: 18 to 30 inches wide, surrounded by uneven roots and sitting in the middle of a tight backyard or boulevard strip. Older silver maples and elms create similar problems, especially on narrow lots with detached garages, alley access, fences, sprinkler heads and pet fencing.

GrindNGo is built for harsh West Allis conditions. Our remote-controlled grinder can work in tight spaces, around marked utilities and near common yard obstacles. Before grinding, we file a Diggers Hotline request for public utility markings. Homeowners point out private lines, sprinkler systems, low-voltage lighting and pet fence wiring. We grind at least 6 inches below grade for standard stump removal. For deeper areas or replanting prep, deep grinding can be added.

How Tree Stump Removal with GrindNGo Works

Our process is 4 steps from quote to clean spot.

  1. Request a Quote
Fill out our contact form with the number and size of stumps you need removed. Measure from the widest above-ground portion of the stump, including any raised roots connected to the stump.
  2. Schedule CutNGo
Once you review the quote and decide to proceed, contact us to schedule. For larger or unclear projects, we can arrange a property visit to identify the stumps in person.
  3. Stump Removal
Our technicians arrive with remote-controlled stump grinding equipment. We grind stumps and exposed root systems at least 6 inches below grade. Deeper grinding is available for an added fee.
  4. Completion and Cleanup
After grinding is complete, we leave the grindings on-site by default. Add cleanup, and our crew hauls away the debris.

Frequently Asked Questions

All stump grinding jobs start with a $225 minimum. Single stumps are priced at $7/inch based on the widest above-ground diameter. Deep grinding is $2.50/inch. Cleanup is $5/inch on individual stumps. For larger jobs, the 4-hour half-day package is $900 and the 8-hour full-day package is $1,800. Cleanup on day packages is $200/hour.

We grind at least 6 inches below soil grade. This depth helps prevent regrowth and prepares the area for topsoil, seed, sod or landscape restoration. Deeper grinding is available for 18–20 inch grinding areas.

By default, the ground stump material stays on-site in a mulch pile. You can spread it, reuse it or leave it near the area. If you add cleanup, GrindNGo hauls away the stump grindings.

We file a Diggers Hotline request before every job for public utility markings. Homeowners are responsible for marking private items such as sprinkler heads, invisible pet fencing, landscape lighting and drain lines.

Some tree species can resprout from the stump or nearby roots. Silver maple, elm, locust, willow and similar species are common examples. Grinding 6 inches or deeper below grade helps stop regrowth while making the area usable again.
